FIGURING OUT YOUR SUPERPOWERS - Part 2

What are you good at…

…and why it’s good to figure out!

Once you understand what you ENJOY and why, it’s time to figure out what you’re GOOD at 🥇

It’s Part 2 of figuring out your Superpowers!

And when you bring the two together, magic happens ✨

We are all good at something, even if you don’t believe it.

It’s not unusual to doubt our abilities, or think others can do things better than us.

And sometimes they can, that’s just life.

However, you can also do some things better than other people!

Why is being good at stuff important?

Well, if you’re going to get paid for doing something, you need to be able to do it well.

And the good news is most of us enjoy doing stuff we’re good at; it tends to be easier, fun, and more likely to be successful 👌

By maximising this good stuff, you can overcome any challenge.

That’s when you know you have a real strength.

The downside is when you’re not very good at something, you tend not to enjoy it. This may mean you do less of it, which has a down side.

It can lead into a negative cycle of can’t do - don’t like - won’t try - don’t get better…

Why do you need to figure this out, surely you just know, right?

Well, quite often you don’t, unless you actually think about it.

You can be good at lots of things, such as certain subjects at school, or different kinds of activities, like a sport, game, craft, or way of thinking. You might be particularly good at Maths or English, excel at swimming or dance, or enjoy reading, singing or talking in front of people.

Being good at something usually means it feels more natural to you, better suited to the way your mind, body or personality works.

And that’s a good thing!

Never be embarrassed or shy because you can do something really well; it’s one of your Superpowers!

So, let’s get on with thinking about the things you are good at…

Got some? Great, try writing them down so you can refer back to them:

So how was that?  Feels good to list all the things you are good at, doesn't it?

You can always add more, but if you struggled to come up with the six things you most rock at, ask others what they think. Sometimes, it is easier for them to see our strengths than it is ourselves.

This may be because you don't believe in yourself, due to a lack of confidence, not rating your own abilities, or just not seeing what others do.

Don't worry, even the most confident and able people doubt themselves.

Now for the slightly more difficult bit; the stuff you are not so good at…

Unfortunately, we all have to do things we are not so good at, or don't enjoy, from time to time.

Knowing this is just as important as understanding the stuff you can do well.

Why?

Well, when we do stuff we are not so good at, we might get lower grades, don't achieve as much, find it more difficult, or don't get as good a reaction from others when we do it.

But you can influence this too.

How?

Well, you can get better at something by changing the way you think about, or approach it. You can practice, or try to understand it more than you do right now. This way, it won’t hold you back as much, or make you feel as bad.

Once you figure this out, you can start to do something about it.

Give it a go - let your mind wander and I'm sure you can come up with a few things you find more difficult:

So, I bet that wasn't as much fun, or made you feel as positive about yourself as the first list did.

Well, don't worry, we can't be good at everything, and you're no different to anyone else.

One last thing to do…

…rank the top four things you're good at and not so good at.

Look at your lists and write them down in rank order, putting your absolute best or strongest thing at Number 1:

My Strongest Things

(the stuff I can do the most with)

1.

2.

3.

4.

… and now for your worst or weakest things, the most difficult at Number 1:

(the stuff I could be better at)

Well, that’s it, you’ve achieved something amazing.

You can make the most of your opportunities, based on knowing what you’re good at & enjoy.
